Turkey entered its first match, a 3–1 win over Egypt at the Second Mediterranean Cup on 28 October 1950. Only after UEFA restructured its youth competitions in 1976 did Turkey begin qualifying for the European Under-21 Championship in the form the tournament takes now.
The team has no ground of its own, moving between stadiums in Istanbul, Adapazarı and Alanya as fixtures demand. Its clearest mark came away from UEFA competition altogether: the gold medal at the 1993 Mediterranean Games in Nîmes, where Fatih Terim's side beat Algeria 2–0 in the final. Silver followed twice more, at the 1997 Games in Bari and the 2005 Games in Almería, and a Toulon Tournament final in 2012 ended in a 3–0 loss to Mexico.
Nihat Kahveci holds the team's appearance record with 32 caps. Egemen Korkmaz has led the side since taking over from Gökhan Gönül.
