Glasgow University

Glasgow is a city built around its university, and for close to a century and a half a football club has carried that university's name onto the pitch. It began on 7 December 1877, when a group of students, unhappy that rugby alone had the college's grounds, gathered under the captaincy of Arthur Mechan and formed a side to play the other code.

The club still trains at Garscube, its own base off Maryhill Road on the northwestern edge of the city, but since 2020 its competitive home has been the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie, a 10,101-seat ground raised for a full-time professional outfit. Playing there in the West of Scotland Football League, in black and gold, a team of students shares turnstiles with Airdrieonians, the club the stadium was built for.

Among the earliest names tied to the University is William Beveridge, capped three times for Scotland either side of 1880, evidence of how close the amateur game once stood to the international one.

Silverware has come mostly in the Queen's Park Shield, lifted nineteen times, the first in 1924 and the last in 1991, a run spread across nearly seven decades rather than one golden generation. Wider honours are scarcer: a Scottish Amateur Cup in 1927, a West of Scotland Amateur Cup in 1932, and the Scottish Qualifying Cup South twice around 1970.

What has not changed is the contrast at the heart of every home fixture: students known simply as The University, taking the field at a stadium whose name belongs to Airdrieonians.
