Newton Stewart

Wigtown & Bladnoch sit just three miles up the road, and it is that fixture, not the league table, that gives Newton Stewart's season its edge — the two met in the final of the J. Haig Gordon Cup in 2014-15, Newton Stewart winning 2-1.

The club took its current name in 1902, having started life in 1880 as Newton Stewart Athletic. Locally they are The Creesiders, after the River Cree that runs past the town, and black and white has been the settled colour since the 1960s, following spells in blue and red hoops, chocolate and grey, navy, and claret and amber.

Some of these have gone quiet for decades between wins, others keep coming back around.

Blairmount Park holds 1,500, a figure the club has rarely had reason to test against anything more than a full house for a cup final.

No one who has worn the shirt went on to a career in the professional game. The one footballer of note to come out of the town, Ian Gibson, played for Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and four other English clubs — but never for Newton Stewart itself, a gap the town's own record books simply leave alone.
