Christian Atsu wore Hatayspor's maroon and white for barely a season before the earthquake that struck southern Turkey in February 2023 killed him along with the club's sporting director, Taner Savut. The same quake tore through the New Hatay Stadium, and the club has played on borrowed ground ever since, at the 9,800-seat Sarıseki Fuat Tosyalı Sports Complex.

The club was stitched together in 1967 from three local sides, Kurtuluşspor, Esnafspor and Reyhanlı Gençlikspor, and carries the nickname Star of the South. It shuttled through the lower tiers, taking the TFF 2. Lig four times between 1970 and 2018 and the TFF 3. Lig in 2012 before finally winning the TFF 1. Lig in 2019–20 and reaching the Süper Lig for the first time. That debut season brought a sixth-place finish, carried by Aaron Boupendza's 22 goals.

Hatayspor measures itself against Adana Demirspor in the Mediterranean Derby, also known locally as the Derby of the South.
