The 1979 league title arrived six years after lava had buried part of the town and taken the club's pitch with it. Eldfjell erupted in January 1973, the islanders were evacuated, and those who came back had to rebuild the ground along with everything else. ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar won the Úrvalsdeild for the first time in the town's recovery years.

Two more championships followed, in 1997 and 1998, and the second of them came with the Icelandic Cup in the same season. The Cup itself has been the more regular visitor: five wins, the first in 1968 and the most recent in 2017.

Relegation from the top flight came in 2010, again in 2014, and again in 2019.

Home is Hásteinsvöllur, which holds 2,300, only 534 of them seated. Yellow and black are the club colours, though the shirts were mostly white through the 2012–2014 seasons.
