The Icelandic Men's Football League Cup, officially known as the Deildabikar karla, operates as a pre-season fixture for the top two tiers of domestic football. Organised by the Football Association of Iceland (Knattspyrnusamband Íslands, KSÍ), the tournament brings together 24 clubs: all 12 sides from the Besta deild karla and the 12 teams from the 1. deild karla. It follows a structure that begins with a group stage, where teams are split into four groups of six, before progressing to a knockout phase of quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. These later stages are played as single-leg matches at neutral venues, typically concluding in April or early May.
KR Reykjavík stands as the most successful participant in the competition's history, claiming eight titles since its inception in 1996. FH Hafnarfjörður holds seven victories, while Valur has secured five. KR Reykjavík's triumphs came in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Valur entered the 2025 edition as the reigning champion after defeating Fylkir 3–2 in the final. The tournament was paused for two seasons during the pandemic suspension from 2020 to 2021 before resuming in 2022. Although it ranks as the third most important domestic tournament behind the league and the primary knockout cup, the League Cup offers a distinct competitive environment. Unlike the Icelandic Cup, which includes clubs from all divisions and provides a route to European football, this competition is restricted to the first and second tiers and serves primarily as a preparation period for the upcoming season.
