Grotta

Grótta go into this season in the Besta deild karla, when they finished top of the 1. deild karla and won promotion to the Icelandic top flight.

The club plays out of Seltjarnarnes, at Vivaldivöllurinn.

The club was founded on 24 April 1967, after Garðar Guðmundsson, a local football enthusiast, had spent the previous year putting the idea together. What followed was a slow climb through the Icelandic pyramid rather than a rapid one: the fourth tier in 1991, the third tier in 2009, and finally the second tier in 2019, each title a step rather than a peak. Blue and yellow have carried the club through all of it, the shirt built around the blue with yellow socks underneath.

Cup football has given Grótta occasional attention without a breakthrough. In 2023 they reached the quarter-finals of the Icelandic Cup before Víkingur Reykjavík ended the run 2-1, the closest the club has come to a deep cup campaign.

The football side sits in the shadow of the club's handball section, which carries most of Grótta's sporting reputation in Iceland, and that imbalance shapes how the team is watched: promotion in 2019 mattered precisely because it was the first time football pulled level with what the rest of the club had already built. What Grótta has never had is a fixture people talk about before it happens — no old score to settle, no derby with history behind it. In a league built around Reykjavík's older clubs, that absence is its own kind of story: Grótta remain the newcomer other sides have not yet decided is worth their attention.
