The club's one season at the top came in 2014, when it won the 1. deild karla and earned promotion to the top flight. It had built toward that with a 2. deild karla title in 2005, the same year it also took the B division of the KSÍ league cup, and it later added the Reykjavíkurmótið, the city's own tournament, in 2013 and 2016.

Breiðholt has produced its own players more often than it has bought them in. Rúnar Kristinsson came through the club before moving on to KR, then abroad to Sweden, Norway and Belgium, and went on to captain Iceland in 104 caps. More recently, Sævar Atli Magnússon made his first-team debut for Leiknir at 15 before leaving for Denmark and then Norway.

Across Breiðholt, ÍR represents the other half of the district, and the two clubs share the only football rivalry the neighbourhood has ever needed.
