Grindavíkurvöllur holds 1,450, a ground small enough that the pitch has never quite been the point — what surrounds it has. The club's own training base sits alongside it in a town built on a spit of lava rock on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and in November 2023 the ground beneath both cracked open. A series of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes forced the full evacuation of Grindavík; the stadium and training pitches split with fissures, sponsors pulled out, and UMF Grindavík spent the best part of two years playing home matches on other clubs' fields. The team returned to a repaired Grindavíkurvöllur in May 2025, eighteen months after leaving it.

UMF Grindavík — Ungmennafélag Grindavíkur, the football wing of a wider sports society — dates to 1935, when earlier local sides came together under one name. The strongest spell followed six decades later: promotion out of the second tier in 1994, a run to the Icelandic Cup final that same year, and a top-flight stay that held for thirteen straight seasons before relegation in 2006/2007. A brief return to the Úrvalsdeild came in 2017, when academy forward Andri Rúnar Bjarnason finished the season as its top scorer and player of the year. The club has otherwise made its home in the second division, the 1. deild karla, winning it twice and adding the League Cup in 2000.

The Grindvíkingar, as the team is known, have carried a name or two through Reykjanes football beyond their own: Lee Sharpe spent a spell here after Manchester United, and goalkeeper Ólafur Gottskálksson played two seasons in yellow and blue. The derby with neighbours KF Keflavík has been fought over thirty-odd times. None of it changes what the town had to do first — get its ground back from the ground itself.
