Valur Reykjavík

Gylfi Sigurðsson returned to Hlíðarendi in 2024, coming home to the club that raised him after a career spent in some of Europe's leading leagues. Valur has rarely lacked players of that stature; the club's own appearance record belongs to Haukur Páll Sigurðsson, who has made more than 245 top-flight starts in red and white.

Six young men from the Reykjavik chapter of the YMCA (K.F.U.M.) founded the club on 11 May 1911. They called it Football Club YMCA at first; within the year it had become Valur.

The championships came early and in clusters. Valur won its first Icelandic title in 1930, and ten more followed by 1945. Further runs came through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and three times since 2007, for 23 titles in total. Eleven Icelandic Cups have followed, most recently in 2016.

KR Reykjavik supplies the fixture that counts most, a derby known locally as Rígurinn; Fram and Víkingur fill out the list of city rivals Valur is measured against.

The club has held its ground at Hlíðarendi, beside the Öskjuhlíð hill, since 1939, and has never played its football anywhere else. The stadium has carried sponsors' names over the years — Vodafonevöllurinn, Valsvöllur, Origovöllurinn — and today, as N1 Völlurinn, holds 2,465 spectators in Valur's red and white.
