Las Palmas

Las Palmas go into the new campaign back in the Segunda División, a return trip they know well after relegation from La Liga closed out the 2024–25 season. Before the drop they had at least made it back to the top flight for 2022–23, and the mood this summer has a lift to it: the club arrived at the Trofeo Carranza and won it, beating Cádiz.

The team was stitched together on 22 August 1949, when five struggling local sides — Real Club Victoria, Marino FC, CD Gran Canaria, Atlético Club and Arenas Club — pooled what they had rather than fold one by one. What followed, decades later, was a stretch from 1964 to 1983 when Las Palmas never left the top division, nineteen seasons running. The high point came in 1968–69, when they finished the league as runners-up, and in 1978 they reached the Copa del Rey final, losing 3–1 to Barcelona at the Bernabéu.

Germán Dévora is the name still attached to that era more than any other — 109 goals across sixteen seasons, and he later returned as honorary president. Alongside him on the pitch was Tonano, a defender who stayed fourteen years; he died at 31.

Since the golden run ended, the club has spent long stretches shuttling between divisions, taking the Segunda title four times along the way. They play in yellow and blue, the colours behind the nickname Los Amarillos, at the Estadio Gran Canaria — home since 2003, when the old Estadio Insular was left behind, and now the stage for whatever this Segunda campaign brings on the island.
