Cadiz

Every Cadiz season carries the Derbi Gaditano. Sevilla and Granada sit further back in the club's list of grudges.

The club traces back to 10 September 1910, registered first as Cádiz Foot-Ball Club: through the 1930s it operated as Sociedad Cultural y Deportiva Mirandilla Foot-ball Club, and for a stretch in the 1940s it merged with the local Hércules side to play as Hércules de Cádiz CF before splitting back into its own identity. The yellow and blue kit gave the team its nickname, Submarino Amarillo — the Yellow Submarine — a tag that has stuck through every version of the club.

Pepe Mejías wore the shirt across three separate spells between 1977 and 1992, long enough that his name became shorthand for the club itself in that era. Cadiz has taken the Segunda División title three times, in 1976/77, 2004/05 and 2019/20, plus a Segunda División B crown in 2008/09 — the promotions that have repeatedly rebuilt a club prone to falling out of the top flight. In 1995 unpaid bills brought the operation close to collapse, and it was the supporters who covered the shortfall to keep it going.

What Cadiz has never done is win La Liga, or even come especially close: fourth place in 1980/81 remains the high point, achieved the same season the club reached a Copa del Rey quarter-final, its best run in that competition. Both marks are still standing.
