Girona

The rivalry that shaped Girona for decades ran west, to Terrassa — a fixture the region simply called the derby, played out in the lower divisions where both sides spent most of their existence. The one that made Girona known outside Catalonia is newer and far more lopsided: Barcelona, an hour down the road, who the Albirrojos beat 1:0 in the 2019 Catalan Super Cup.

The club came out of a collapse. When UE Girona folded, a group met in the Norat café in July 1930 and started again under a new name. The red-and-white vertical stripes gave the side its nicknames, and the early years produced Fèlix Farró, a defender who played more than 600 matches between 1930 and 1946 — a span covering the club's first season in the Segunda, in 1934/35, and the years when the Franco-era authorities had the name printed in Castilian as Gerona Club de Fútbol, without ever formally changing it.

What followed was mostly the fourth tier. Girona won the Tercera in 1934, 1948, 1955, 1989 and 2006, each title a return to a level they could not hold. The Segunda B came in 2007/08. Promotion to the top flight took until 2016/17, when a second-place finish under Óscar García put the club in La Liga for the first time.

Christian Stuani arrived in that period and stayed long enough to become the club's leading scorer with 226 goals — the figure that anchors the whole modern era. In 2023/24 Artem Dovbyk finished as La Liga's top scorer with 24.

Home is Montilivi, capacity 14 624, in use since 1970, when the club left Vista Alegre. City Football Group has owned Girona since 2017; a further stake was held by Pere Guardiola.

Terrassa remain the historical fixture. Barcelona are the one the city now marks on the calendar, and the 2025 Catalan Cup, won on penalties against Espanyol, kept the argument regional.
