Skonto Stadium seats 6,747, a bowl in Riga that has hosted the national team since the 1990s, with Daugava Stadium taking over twice in between, from 1991 to 2000 and again from 2018 to 2022. The federation behind the team, the Latvian Football Federation, was set up in Riga on 19 June 1921, and the side it fielded took the field for the first time on 24 September 1922, drawing 1–1 with Estonia. That continuity broke in 1940, when the Soviet occupation ended the team's existence, and it took until 1992, after independence was restored, for it to play again.

The crimson shirt and white shorts carry the nickname 11 Wolves. Latvia finished bottom of Group D at Euro 2004, drawing 0–0 with Germany before losses to the Czech Republic and the Netherlands closed the tournament. No World Cup has followed. Vitālijs Astafjevs remains the man most associated with the shirt, with 167 caps.

Where Latvia has been consistently hard to beat is the Baltic Cup, against Estonia and Lithuania. Thirteen titles stretch from 1928 to 2018.
