Lugano II

Mattia Bottani spent two seasons in the black and white of the reserves before anyone in Ticino paid much attention, 45 appearances between 2009 and 2011, four goals.

Lugano II plays under FC Lugano, the club founded on 28 July 1908, though the reserve side itself carries no clean date of birth in the record — it was already competing as an U21 side by 2008, under names that have shifted over the years between Lugano U21 and Team Ticino U21. What the record does hold is two league titles in the 2. Liga Interregional, Group 4: one in 2008/09, another in 2020/21, that second one won while playing as Team Ticino.

Home matches are not played at the Cornaredo itself but on Campo B2, the training pitch tucked inside the Centro Sportivo Cornaredo complex, holding 1,000.

There is no derby to speak of. Reserve sides in the Promotion League do not enter the Swiss Cup and cannot be promoted past a certain point; the closest thing to a local match-up would be FC Paradiso, also of the canton. The regular opposition is instead a circuit of other clubs' understudies — FC Luzern II, FC Zürich II, FC Basel II among them.

That purpose has produced uneven form: relegated from 1. Liga Promotion at the bottom of the table in 2023/24, back in the division and sitting mid-table through 2025/26 before slipping to 15th by August 2026.
