Barcelona sign 16-year-old Dany Freire
Barcelona have signed Portuguese-Luxembourgish attacker Dany Freire on his 16th birthday, with the Juvenil B prospect impressing in summer trials and youth call-ups.

Luxembourg spent the autumn of 2025 under a new head coach, Jeff Strasser, who took over on 19 August 2025 from Luc Holtz. The team arrives in League B of the UEFA Nations League for the first time. A run like that from a side that has never reached a World Cup or European Championship finals, and holds the record for the most qualifying campaigns without getting there, changes what a home game at the Stade de Luxembourg means these days.
The federation itself dates to 22 November 1908, and the national side followed in 1911, losing its first match 1–4 to France that October. The win over France came in February 1914, 5–4, and it took decades before the country's best-remembered result arrived: in the Euro 1964 qualifiers, Luxembourg beat the Netherlands 3–2 on aggregate in the first round, before Denmark ended the run.
Laurent Jans has carried the shirt more than anyone else in the team's history, past a hundred caps, while Gerson Rodrigues has become the leading scorer with 23 goals, ahead of Danel Sinani and the wartime-era mark set by Léon Mart. The Red Lions, as they're known, reached their highest FIFA ranking, 82nd, in September 2018 — a marker that sat oddly next to decades of near-permanent bottom-seeding in qualifying groups, and one the Nations League run has since made less of an outlier.
Geography settles the rivalries: Belgium and the Netherlands sit either side of the Grand Duchy, and matches against either carry the weight of the wider Benelux relationship, sharpened whenever Luxembourg has had a result to defend rather than just absorb.
