Barcelona sign 16-year-old Dany Freire

Barcelona have signed 16-year-old Dany Freire, with the Portuguese-Luxembourgish attacker putting pen to paper on the day he turned 16.

Barcelona had reportedly agreed terms weeks earlier but could not register him until he passed the minimum signing age.

Freire was born in Lisbon on 19 September 2010 and moved to Luxembourg as a child, coming through the ranks at Fola Esch and Racing FC Union Letzebuerg. He holds both nationalities and has switched allegiance from Luxembourg's youth sides to Portugal's, where he has just been called up for the Under-17s.

His trial spell doubled as an audition. He scored three goals across summer tournaments, was named MVP in one of them, and featured in a youth win over Real Madrid.

The move fits a pattern at Barcelona of signing prospects as soon as the rules allow, avoiding transfer fees further down the line by developing them in-house. three other January arrivals, Juwensley Onstein, Ajay Tavares and Patricio Pacífico, have had injury setbacks but remain rated highly inside the club.

Freire joins a Portugal youth pool that includes Ronaldo Júnior, born in the same year, 2010.

If Freire settles quickly at Juvenil B, Barcelona will hope he follows the same path already being tested with last winter's arrivals, though at this stage the club's investment is in potential rather than certainty.
