It grew out of a payroll — Masters Security Services, a firm owned by Malawi's defence minister Alfred Gangata, put its name and its money behind a side called Masters Security Rangers in 2010. Then came 2016, the Central Region Football League title, and promotion to the TNM Super League.

Two years after arriving, Masters won the Carlsberg Cup. That took them into the CAF Confederation Cup, twice, though on both occasions they went out at the preliminary round. In 2019 they finished fourth in the league. The club was thrown out of the top flight in 2020 and Gangata announced he was selling.

What came back was not quite the same club.

Mponda's first months also cost him a forward: Hudah Muyaba left in 2026 after things came to a head between player and manager.
