Be Forward Wanderers

Blantyre is Malawi's commercial capital, and in 1962 a group of Portuguese immigrants settled there — supporters of FC Porto — put together a football side. They gave it blue and white, the colours of the club they had left behind, and those colours have outlasted almost everything else about the arrangement. It is the oldest active club in the country.

Almost nothing else has stayed fixed. The name changed with whoever was paying: Yamaha Wanderers in the 1960s, Limbe Leaf through the tobacco years, Telecom and then MTL, and from 2014 the Japanese used-car exporter Be Forward, whose money briefly put the team in orange shirts. That deal ended in 2021 and the club went back to Mighty Wanderers. The nickname the supporters use, The Nomads, predates all of it.

The Nomads have won seven Super League titles, the first in 1990 and the most recent in 2025. Nyasa Big Bullets share Blantyre with them, and the derby between the two is the biggest fixture in Malawian football. For decades both played it at Kamuzu Stadium, a 65,000-capacity ground the two rivals used as a shared home. That ended when Kamuzu was ruled out for elite matches on licensing grounds for the 2026/27 season.

Which leaves the strange geography of the present day. Wanderers now play much of their football at Balaka Stadium, holding 3,000. They have made it work: Balaka has become the place opponents dread going.
