Mieszko Gniezno

For decades, the primary local derby for Mieszko Gniezno has been against Start Gniezno. This tension stems from a significant organizational change in September 2015, when the city of Gniezno decided to consolidate three local football clubs—KS Gniezno, KS Mieszko Gniezno, and Gniewko Gniezno—into a single entity.

The club itself carries a weightier history than its current league position suggests. It was founded in November 1974 by activists from the former football section of KS Stella Gniezno, which had existed since 1915, and directors of local light industry enterprises. Mieszko considers itself the successor to Stella’s traditions and was named after Mieszko I of Poland, who ruled the region in the 10th century when Gniezno was the capital. The club plays at Stadion Miejski w Gnieźnie, located at ul. Strumykowa. The stadium was inaugurated in 1974, the same year as the club, originally holding around 8,000 spectators. The ground’s capacity is now listed variously: 3,382 by some sources, or 2,050 by others referring to currently installed seats.

They eliminated Gwardia Warszawa, Śląsk Wrocław, and Szombierki Bytom before losing to Legia Warsaw. The club has since won the IV liga Greater Poland Championship twice, in 2002-03 and 2017-18, and the Regional league Championship in 2000-01 and 2016-17.

Yet the club’s most famous output remains a single goalkeeper. Łukasz Fabiański played for Mieszko during the 2003-2004 season before joining Lech Poznań. He went on to play for Arsenal, Swansea City, and West Ham United in the Premier League, and has earned over 100 caps for the Poland national team. Other players like Daniel Brylewski, identified as a product of the youth system, remain in the shadow of that legacy.
