In 2009/10, a fourth-tier side from a border town knocked GKS Katowice out of the Polish Cup, winning 3-1 before falling to Piast Gliwice in the Round of 16.

The club has carried its city's post-war history in its name changes more than most: founded as Kotwica Słubice in August 1945, it passed through Gwardia, Ogniwo, Odra, Słubiczanka and Komes before settling on Polonia in October 1993.

Its best-known product wore the shirt only briefly. Łukasz Fabiański came through the youth side in 1999-2000 before a career that took him to the Polish national goal, Arsenal and West Ham.

League form has stayed modest: fourth place in III liga, in 1997/98 and again in 2006/07, remains the club's ceiling. Local rivalry runs two ways — across the Oder against FC Victoria 91 Frankfurt, and inland against Celuloza Kostrzyn in what's known as the Derby Ziemi Lubuskiej.

Promotion came again in 2023/24, when Polonia won IV liga Lubuska and returned to III liga for 2024/25.
