The federation itself started life in March 1928 as a regional league affiliated to the French Football Federation, not as a body running its own national team. That changed in 2004, when it reorganised as the Fédération Calédonienne de Football, an independent association that let the territory join FIFA, as its 205th member, and the Oceania Football Confederation in its own right. The French federation still supplies coaching education, so the split was administrative rather than a break.

What the team has to show for the years since sits mostly in the Pacific Games rather than in OFC competition. In the OFC Nations Cup the best finish is runner-up, done twice, in 2008 and 2012.

The fixture that matters most is against Tahiti. The two have met 62 times since 1953, and New Caledonia holds a narrow edge, 28 wins to 25, with nine draws separating them.

Kaï's goals and Zeoula's caps both belong to a side that, in March 1928, was not yet allowed to be a national team at all.
