Earlier championships came under different formats and different eras entirely: 1974's Torneo Metropolitano, the 1987/88 Torneo Nacional, a 1990/91 final against the Clausura champion, and the 1992 Clausura itself.

Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys carries the name of Isaac Newell, an English immigrant who founded a commercial school in Rosario; his son Claudio gathered its graduates and staff to form the team, and the name has never changed since. The school's red and black colours followed them onto the pitch, chosen to nod at Isaac's English roots and his wife's German ones. The nickname that stuck, though, has nothing to do with any of that: in the 1920s the club agreed to play a charity match for a leprosy clinic after a rival refused, and "Los Leprosos" has followed them ever since.

Rosario Central is the other half of the story that matters most locally — the Clásico Rosarino has been contested since 1905, with no love lost across more than a century of meetings. Gerardo Massino's 505 appearances and Víctor Ramos's 104 goals still top the club's own records.

Between 1995 and 2009, the club operated under state-appointed administration, and the youth structure that had built its reputation went into decline. The stadium named for Marcelo Bielsa has since grown to 49,000 seats.
