O Elvas

The Estádio Patalino still carries the name of a striker who played for O Elvas in the 1940s. It used to hold 15,200 people on open terraces; a rebuild finished in early 2025 stripped those away and left 6,200 individual seats.

The club itself was stitched together on 15 August 1947, when Sport Lisboa e Elvas and Sporting Clube Elvense, both struggling without real backing from Benfica and Sporting CP in Lisbon, merged rather than fold separately. What came out carried the whole region's name into its title, Clube Alentejano de Desportos, and its colours, blue and gold, gave it the nickname Blue & Gold Knights.

O Elvas reached the First Division five times, and the first attempt, in 1947–48, is still the one worth telling: an eighth-place finish that included a 2–1 win over Benfica. Nearly four decades later, under coach Carlos Cardoso, who died in December 2025, the club returned for 1986–87 and stayed up only because the league expanded; relegation followed the season after and the top flight was not revisited.

Between those two spells sits a trophy that mattered more locally: the Campeonato Nacional da 3ª Divisão in 1954–55, won by beating GD Chaves 2–1 in the final. The club took the Campeonato de Portugal Serie C in 2024–25.

Money has been the recurring opponent. The senior team went dark for several years in the 2010s, and in 2024 the professional side was hived off into a separate company, now 95% owned by Loyzo Technology GmbH; by 2026 the original club was accusing that company of leaving young players unpaid and unfed.

One academy graduate, Henrique Sereno Fonseca, left after the 2004–05 season for a career that ran through FC Porto and Vitória de Guimarães and brought two caps for Portugal.

6,200 is what the ground holds now, a fraction of the 15,200 it once did.
