União de Leiria

The Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa holds nearly 24,000 people, more than the city of Leiria itself would fill on most weekends, a legacy of the ground's other life as one of the venues built for the 2004 European Championship. Long before that renovation the ground carried the plainer name Estádio Municipal, and it is still there, on the same site, that União de Leiria play their football.

The club took shape in 1966, and its best years came in a stretch between 1994 and 2007, when Leiria stopped being a stop on the way up and became a fixture worth watching. José Mourinho took charge there in 2001, and in his one full season the team reached third place in the league and the final of the Cup. A Brazilian forward, Derlei, was central to that run, scoring 42 goals in 92 games before following Mourinho to Porto; the club later made him an honorary member. The Intertoto Cup, won in 2007, remains the one continental trophy on the shelf.

Money undid what results had built. In June 2013 the club's SAD, the commercial entity that ran the senior side, was declared bankrupt with debts of €13.5 million. The sporting rights passed to another club for a symbolic €1,000, the kind of figure that keeps a name alive on paper while the real work starts again from the bottom of the pyramid. A Russian investor took a stake in 2015 and left in October 2020, handing his position to Armando Marques.

Derby weekends still mean Académica de Coimbra, a fixture known locally as the Dérbi do Centro. Promotion arrived again in 2022-23, when Leiria beat Belenenses 1-0 in the Liga 3 final to return to professional football, the level from which this next chapter begins.
