Olimpija Ljubljana

Ljubljana names its football club after the city's own emblem rather than the other way round.

There have in fact been two clubs, and the football association does not treat them as one. The original NK Olimpija traced back to 1945, when ŠD Tabor and ŠD Udarnik merged into NK Enotnost, renamed Olimpija in 1962. It reached a Yugoslav Cup final in 1970, lost over two legs to Crvena Zvezda, and won four straight Slovenian titles from 1991–92 to 1994–95 as the country's football moved out from behind the old federation. Debt closed it down in 2005. What replaced it, founded on 2 March 2005 as NK Bežigrad, took the Olimpija name only in 2008, after a spell as Olimpija Bežigrad. The badge still carries the date 1911, borrowed from ND Ilirija 1911, a claim of lineage the federation has never recognised on paper, whatever the shirts and the songs say.

The rebuilt club has since matched its predecessor's haul of four league titles — 2015–16, 2017–18, 2022–23 and 2024–25 — and added four Slovenian Cups between 2017–18 and 2022–23.

The academy's clearest export needs no qualification: Jan Oblak went through Olimpija's youth ranks up to under-19 level before leaving for Atlético Madrid.
