The Slovenian PrvaLiga (1. SNL) stands as the premier football competition in Slovenia. Established in 1991 following the nation's independence, it succeeded the Yugoslav league system where clubs such as Maribor and Olimpija once competed. The league operates at the highest level of the domestic pyramid, currently featuring ten clubs engaged in a quadruple round-robin format that generates 36 matches per side.
Distinct from the more stable structures in Croatia or Austria, the competition navigates unique challenges inherent to a small market with a population of approximately 2.1 million. This context results in lower UEFA coefficients and frequent financial instability. Unlike its neighbours, Slovenian clubs often confront budget constraints, relying heavily on player sales and digital scouting to maintain competitiveness. The landscape has also seen the emergence of "phoenix clubs," such as NK Olimpija Ljubljana, which restarted from the fifth tier after the original entity dissolved in 2005.
On the pitch, the stakes are defined by European qualification and survival. The champion secures a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, while the second and third-placed teams enter the UEFA Conference League qualifiers. Relegation impacts the bottom of the table directly: the tenth-place team faces automatic drop to the Second League (2. SNL), while the ninth-placed side enters a two-legged playoff against the runner-up of the second tier. The 2. SNL itself comprises 16 teams in a double round-robin format, offering one direct promotion spot and one playoff place.
NK Maribor holds the record for success with 16 titles, including a streak of seven consecutive championships between 1996 and 2003. The current reigning champion is NK Celje, securing their third title in the 2025–26 season after previous victories in 2019–20 and 2023–24. The league also awards the Slovenian Cup winner a spot in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers, with this position passing to the next highest-placed league team if the cup winner has already qualified through the league standings.
