In the spring of 1980 Orléans reached the final of the Coupe de France and ran into Saint-Étienne and came away runners-up.
The club turned professional that same year, 1980. The 2009–10 Championnat de France Amateur title, won in Group D, opened the way, and four seasons later, in 2013–14, Orléans won the Championnat National to reach Ligue 2 for the first time.
Two players carried the Stade de la Source's name further than most of what the club achieved on the pitch. Florian Thauvin came through the academy before going on to win the World Cup with France in 2018 and later captained RC Lens.
Matches against Châteauroux and Tours are still billed locally as the Derby Centre. The ground itself holds 7,533.
