Islamabad is a planned capital, built in the 1960s as a government city, and its football lives largely in one place: the Jinnah Sports Stadium, which holds about 48,700. It was here in 1989 that Pakistan won the South Asian Games gold medal, with a striker named Sharafat Ali in the side. He won a second gold in 1991 in Colombo, and he had already scored Pakistan's first goal in a World Cup qualifier.

The Shaheens, the Falcons, wear green and white, which is why they are also called the Men in Green. Their governing body, the Pakistan Football Federation, was set up in December 1947 and the team played its first international in 1950. The 1950s and 1960s were the competitive years. Muhammad Umer, who captained the side, scored 16 goals in 30 appearances, including a hat-trick in a 4–1 win over Iran in the 1960 Asian Cup qualifiers. In 1952 Pakistan shared the Asian Quadrangular Tournament with India, and in 1962 they lost the Merdeka Tournament final to Singapore.

The years between 2015 and 2022 were the worst. Government interference led to a FIFA suspension in 2016, which ran until 2017, and by June 2019 the team had fallen to 205th in the world rankings. Recovery came under Stephen Constantine, who took charge in 2022. His side beat Cambodia to reach the World Cup qualifying rounds. In July 2025 Nolberto Solano, the Peruvian who played for Newcastle United, took over the senior and under-23 teams.

The most recent trophy is the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in 2024, decided against Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the closest rival in the region. When the two met in Kabul in 2013, it was their first match there in 36 years. India is the other, a rivalry carried over from the wider sporting contest on the subcontinent, though the two meet far less often in football than in cricket.
