Fabrizio Miccoli captained the side for six seasons, from 2007 to 2013, and left as its record scorer in Serie A, with 74 goals, and across all competitions, with 81. Paulo Dybala came through a few years later, sold in 2015, seven years before he lifted the same trophy with Argentina.

The club traces itself to 1 November 1900, when British residents of the city founded the Anglo-Palermitan Athletic and Foot-Ball Club. The 1907 rebrand to Palermo Foot-Ball Club brought the pink-and-black kit behind the nickname Rosanero. What followed was less a single institution than a sequence of refoundations: revival as Unione Sportiva Palermo in 1920 after the war, a merger with Vigor Palermo in 1928, another with Unione Sportiva Juventina Palermo in 1941, incorporation as Società Sportiva Calcio Palermo in 1968. A 1987 bankruptcy produced Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo, which inherited the sporting title; a second collapse in 2019 led to Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Palermo, which restored the original name, Palermo Football Club, in 2020.

Serie B has been the club's recurring stage — five titles there since 1932, the last in 2014. Home games are played at the Stadio Renzo Barbera, still known locally as La Favorita, which holds 36,365.

The fixture against Catania carries the weight of the island: the two clubs represent Sicily's largest cities, and their meetings are known simply as the Derby di Sicilia.
