Perth Glory

Optus Stadium holds 61,266 for general events and can be stretched to 65,000 when it is set up for rectangular sports such as football. Perth Glory played their first competitive match in the National Soccer League (NSL) in October 1996, ten months after the club was formed on 1 December 1995.

Glory won the Premiership three times, in 1998–99, 1999–00 and 2001–02, and the NSL Championship in 2001–02 and 2003–04. Bobby Despotovski, the club's all-time leading scorer with 129 goals, belongs to that period. Jamie Harnwell, who made more than 256 appearances, holds the club's appearance record.

The A-League brought a different kind of drama. In 2018–19 Glory finished top of the table, then lost the Grand Final to Sydney FC. The 2014–15 salary cap scandal kept them out of the finals, and in 2023–24 a financial crisis ended with the Pelligra Group taking over the club. Alessandro Circati went from Perth to the Socceroos and Benfica, and Adam Taggart also reached the national side.

Wellington Phoenix are the "Distance Derby" opponents because of the travel involved in playing them. Western United bring the "State of Origin" tag, Western Australia against Victoria. Before either, the local opponent was Perth SC, in the Perth Derby.
