The name and the red band across the chest came from a club that no longer existed. River Plate F.C. broke up in 1929; three years later Olimpia and Capurro, two clubs from the dockside of Montevideo, merged and took up both. That is why the white shirt still carries the banda roja, and why nobody in Uruguay confuses the new club with its namesake.

The port stayed in the name the crowd uses. Darseneros — the dock workers, the people from the Dársena — is what the club has been called since, and the ground it plays on holds around 6,000.

Six times River Plate has won the Segunda División, first in 1943 and most recently in 2004, which describes the shape of the club's century better than any single season: up, down, and back up again. The top division has never been won. Second place in 1992 and again in 2007/08 is as close as the club has come.

The best of it came later and away from the league table. Under Juan Ramón Carrasco, who played for the club before he coached it, River Plate reached the semi-finals of the 2009 Copa Sudamericana. Seven years on, Guillermo Almada took the side into the Copa Libertadores in 2016 — the first time the club had qualified.

Among those who wore the shirt early was Severino Varela, who arrived in the founding year of 1932 and stayed a decade, which is to say he was there for almost the whole of the club's first chapter as a merged side from the docks.
