Local sides already turned out under that name from the 1899–1900 season, though the club counts its founding from 1902.

Thornhill Park, on Wisloe Road, came to the club in 1951, left to it by a former player, Evi Thornhill; the ground did not take her name until 2016.

The late 1980s brought financial trouble severe enough to threaten the club altogether, and Slimbridge rebuilt itself from the Stroud and District League back up through the Gloucestershire County League and into the Hellenic League. Promotion to Southern League level finally arrived in 2007 — and within days the club turned it down. Southern League football did not return until 2015, this time won through the Western League.

Tuffley Rovers supply the local derby, and it was Tuffley who stood in the way of the club's most recent title, the 2025–26 Hellenic League Premier Division, settled with a comeback win over them that sent Slimbridge back up to the Southern League.
