Stade Soussien

Ahmed Mechmeche is the name attached to the club's beginnings: in 1949 he led the group in Sousse that obtained the official visa for a green-and-white side. The city gave it its nickname, Les Soussiens, the demonym for people from the Sousse region.

The 1961–62 season was the most unusual in its history. Étoile Sportive du Sahel was dissolved in March 1961, and Stade Soussien took in many of its players, Mohsen Habacha among them. The combined squad finished runner-up in the Tunisian Ligue 1 and reached the Tunisian Cup final in 1962, where it lost to the re-established Étoile Sportive du Sahel. The same year it won the Coupe Hédi Chaker, the Tunisian Super Cup. In 1989 the club reached the final of the Arab Cup Winners' Cup and finished as runner-up.

The last stay in the top flight came through the Ligue 2 title of 1995–96, which took the club up for 1996–97. It has not returned to Ligue 1 since. By 2005–06 the club was in the amateur leagues, the fourth tier, and it went down to the regional divisions in 2009 and again in 2012. It has since worked its way back to Ligue 3 and Ligue 2. Its most frequent opponent in those divisions is AS Agareb, another club from the Sousse region.

Home is the 2,500-seat Stade Mustapha Amara, also called Stade Camp Zaouiet. That is a long way from the 1962 cup final, but the club Mechmeche registered in 1949 is still playing in Sousse.
