Stevenage

The team that plays out of Stevenage today exists because the one before it did not survive. Stevenage Athletic, itself a renamed version of a club that had run since 1894 as Stevenage Town, went under, and in 1976 a new club rose in its place: Stevenage Borough.

For more than three decades the name carried "Borough," and Broadhall Way stayed a non-league ground. In 1995-96 Borough topped the Conference Premier, but the Football Association blocked the promotion — the stadium fell short of League requirements, and the club had to wait.

The wait ended in 2010, with another Conference Premier title, this time an admission ticket to the Football League. Weeks before that first league season, the club shortened its name, dropping "Borough" to become simply Stevenage. A year later it went further, winning the League Two play-offs and reaching League One, a level from which it has rarely strayed since.

Between those two promotions sits Wembley. Stevenage won the FA Trophy in 2007 and 2009, and the first of those finals, played at the newly rebuilt stadium, made the club the first to win a competitive match there.

The rivalry with Luton Town, sometimes called the M1 derby, and fixtures against Barnet supply the sharper edges of a schedule otherwise built around the lower divisions. In 2025-26 Stevenage matched its own best-ever league finish, sixth in League One, first set in 2011-12.

Broadhall Way, the ground that once cost the club a promotion, now holds 7,318.
