The club playing under that name only dates to 2000, when the football section of a Bressanone sports society, Sport Verein Milland, was restructured into a limited company and shifted its base to Bolzano. It had already been sold on once before, in 1995, when a group of local businessmen bought the section, renamed it FC Südtirol–Alto Adige and switched the shirts to the white and red that give the club its nickname, Biancorossi in Italian and Weiß-Rote in German.

Promotion has come slowly and, twice, painfully. Südtirol lost play-off finals for a place in the higher division in 2003 against Novara and again in 2014 against Pro Vercelli.

What started as one sports club's football section in Bressanone in 1974 is the same institution still turning out goalkeepers in Bolzano.
