SV Elversberg

Elversberg is a village of some 13,000 people, folded into the Saarland hills, and its size is not incidental to how the club is talked about locally — "Dorfverein" is the word that sticks, the village club, and it is used with more pride than irony now that the results have stopped matching the description.

SV Elversberg traces back to 1907, when it started life as FC Germania Elversberg. War broke the club apart in 1914, and it took until 1918 to put it back together, this time as Sportvereinigung VfB Elversberg. A postwar merger of local associations folded it into a wider Sportgemeinde before it split off again in 1952 under its own name, settling eventually into the short form still used today.

For most of that history the club's business was Saarland football — regional titles, seven wins in the Saarlandpokal, the double of league and cup in 2021/22. What changed the picture was 2022/23: Elversberg won the 3. Liga and went up to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time, a level the village had never touched. Then, in 2025/26, they finished second there and moved up again, into the Bundesliga itself, a second promotion inside three years.

The cup runs told the same story before the league form confirmed it. Elversberg beat Hannover on penalties in 2010/11, then, over a decade later, knocked out Mainz on penalties and beat Bayer Leverkusen 4:3 in the DFB-Pokal — a lower-division side twice getting the better of Bundesliga opposition in the same competition, years apart.

Home games are played at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde, a ground built out in stages toward a planned capacity of 15,500. Right now it holds 14,221 — more seats than the village has residents.
