Sandhausen, a village directly south of Heidelberg, is Germany's smallest professional football club, and its supporters call it the Gauls from the Hardtwald.
The club dates from 1 August 1916 and traces its line back to FC Victoria 1905 Sandhausen. It spent 1943 to 1945 merged with TSV Walldorf and VfB Wiesloch as KSG Walldorf-Wiesloch, and after the war ran as SG Sandhausen until 1951, when it took back the name SV Sandhausen 1916. Hansi Flick came through the youth teams in that era.
Gerd Dais led the club to the 3. Liga title and promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. The first season ended with Sandhausen bottom of the table, but MSV Duisburg were refused a licence and Sandhausen stayed up. In 2016–17 they beat SC Freiburg on penalties to reach the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
Regional football has been steadier. Relegation from the 2. Bundesliga in 2023 was followed by a second drop, to the Regionalliga Südwest, in 2025. Olaf Janßen was in charge that season, and the club lost its last nine games.
