Wigry Suwałki

Maciej Makuszewski left Wigry Suwałki in 2010 and came back in 2023, after years elsewhere and a Poland cap. Wigry were then in the fourth tier. He finished as the side's top scorer. In the 2023/24 season the club won the IV Liga Podlaska Group and went back up to the III Liga.

Wigry had been lower before, and higher. The club began in 1947 as WKS Suwałki, a military sports club. In 1955 and 1956 it merged with three local sides: Sparta, Spójnia and Budowlani. The merged club took the name Wigry. The regional cup came four times, in 1969, 1970, 1979 and 1980.

The best season came in 2013/14. Wigry won the II Liga East Group and reached the second tier for the first time. They did not have a big budget or a national name. They had Suwałki, a town near the Lithuanian border, and a nickname, the White and Blues, taken from the club colours. Supporters also call the club "Duma Suwalszczyzny", the Pride of the Suwałki Region.

Rivalry here is mostly a matter of geography. Jagiellonia Białystok are the big neighbour, and ultras call the fixture "Wojny Północy", the Wars of the North. Closer to home, the city has its own derby against Ślepsk Suwałki.

Among those who came through Wigry, the best known is Wojciech Kowalewski. He was a goalkeeper and an academy graduate. He went on to play for Legia Warszawa and Shakhtar Donetsk, and he kept goal for Poland.
