Wolfenbuttel

The name Wolfenbütteler SV disappeared from German league tables on 30 June 2002, when the club merged with MTV Wolfenbüttel.

WSV was formed in September 1945, in the first months after the war, with Ferdinand Fabra as its opening coach.

Its best spell on the pitch belongs to the late 1950s, when Gerhard Gollnow scored 30 and then 29 goals in his first two seasons, earned two caps for the Amateur-Nationalmannschaft in 1958, and moved on to Hannover 96. The club's one national-level trophy came in 1965, with victory in the Niedersachsenpokal.

A second wind arrived in the early 1990s, when former professionals joined a club used to amateur football: goalkeeper Uwe Hain, who had kept goal for Eintracht Braunschweig, VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV, and forward Peter Lux, a 1987 DFB-Pokal winner and 1984 Olympian who had played for the same two Hamburg and Braunschweig clubs. Their arrival coincided with WSV's strongest run in years, winning the Verbandsliga Niedersachsen-Ost and the Niedersachsenliga-Ost double in 1996 and reaching the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen, the fourth tier, until 2000.

It played at the Meesche-Stadion, holding between 3,500 and 5,000, in the blue, white and red the club wore throughout its 57 years. Even with Hain and Lux on the books, WSV never pushed on from the fourth tier into anything higher before the merger closed the book on it for good.
