About

The Caribbean Premier League is the premier Twenty20 franchise cricket competition in the West Indies. It stands at the top of the regional T20 pyramid, distinct from Cricket West Indies' traditional territorial domestic competitions. The league utilises a franchise model where teams represent cities or nations within the region and can sign international stars.

It was founded in 2013 by Cricket West Indies, replacing the previous inter-island Caribbean Twenty20 tournament. Initial funding was provided by Ajmal Khan of Verus International. The competition currently features seven teams: Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Kingsmen, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, St Lucia Kings, and Trinbago Knight Riders.

The season format consists of a double round-robin group stage where each team plays 10 matches, split equally between home and away fixtures. Home matches are played in concentrated blocks at the team's home venue. The top teams advance to a playoff stage comprising an Eliminator, two Qualifiers, and a Final, all held at a single neutral venue. There is no promotion or relegation; the league is a closed franchise system.

Trinbago Knight Riders are the most successful club, having won five titles. They are also the current champions as of the 2025 season. Other notable winners include the Jamaica Tallawahs with three titles and Barbados Tridents with two. The league has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship: Digicel, Limacol, Hero MotoCorp, and Republic Bank. Team compositions have evolved, with the Antigua Hawksbills replaced by the Falcons and Jamaica Tallawahs by the Kingsmen. Key records include Johnson Charles as the leading run-scorer and Sunil Narine as the leading wicket-taker. The CPL is distinct from other regional T20 events like the West Indies Breakout T20 League, which focuses on emerging talent, and the defunct Stanford 20/20.
