About

Continental Cup is a regional Twenty20 International cricket tournament for nations in Europe, including Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Malta, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. Organised by Cricket Europe, the governing body for cricket on the continent, the competition provides a platform for developing teams to play against one another in a structured environment. The event is also referred to as the Continental Cricket Cup or Continental T20I Cup.

The inaugural edition took place in 2015, hosted by Romania. Luxembourg secured the first title by defeating the hosts in the final. Since then, the tournament has been held at irregular intervals, with Romania winning in 2018 and 2021. Austria claimed the trophy in 2019, while Hungary became champions in 2024. The competition operates as a standalone tournament rather than a league system with automatic promotion or relegation. Instead, it functions alongside the ICC Europe T20 Leagues, which handle the primary ranking and movement between divisions.

Recent editions typically feature six national teams. The format involves a group stage where participants are divided into two groups of three. Each team plays every other side in its group once. The top two teams from each group progress to the semi-finals, followed by a final and a third-place playoff. This structure allows teams to accumulate experience and points that may influence their standing in the broader European qualification pathway for global events.

A parallel Women’s Continental Cup began in 2022. This version of the tournament serves as the official regional qualifier for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The men’s competition also plays a developmental role, offering matches that count towards international status for players and teams that do not regularly participate in the higher tiers of the European league structure. The Romanian Cricket Federation has frequently been involved in hosting the men’s editions.
