England in New Zealand 2024/25

The bilateral cricket tour between England and New Zealand is a recurring series rather than a standalone tournament. Governed by the International Cricket Council alongside the England and Wales Cricket Board and New Zealand Cricket, the structure varies by visit. Tours typically include two or three Test matches, three One Day Internationals, and three Twenty20 Internationals. The Test series is contested for the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, a prize launched in November 2024. Crafted from wood sourced from bats used by Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe, the trophy honours both players. Before its introduction, no single named trophy existed for the entire relationship, though individual series occasionally carried local titles.

Records and history

England dominates the Test format with 52 victories against New Zealand’s 13. The One Day International record is nearly even, with England holding 45 wins to New Zealand’s 44. In Twenty20 Internationals, England leads 13 to seven. Individual milestones include Joe Root of England accumulating the most Test runs (1,707) and Richard Hadlee of New Zealand taking the most wickets (97). The first official Test series occurred in the 1929–30 season, with the opening match played at Lancaster Park in Christchurch from January 10 to 13, 1930. England won that four-match series 1–0, marking New Zealand’s debut as a Test-playing nation.

Warm-up fixtures feature the Prime Minister's XI, an invitational side selected by the New Zealand Prime Minister. New Zealand Cricket renamed the traditional "New Zealand XI" team in November 2024 to honour Prime Minister Christopher Luxon attending the match against England. This exhibition match remains a one-off event and is not classified as a formal international fixture.
