The ICC Men's T20 World Cup stands as the premier global tournament for Twenty20 cricket, organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). As the youngest of the three major ICC global events, it sits alongside the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy, yet distinguishes itself through a faster pace and broader inclusion of associate nations. The competition operates as a standalone event without the promotion and relegation structures found in league pyramids, with qualification determined by automatic berths for host nations and winners of regional qualifiers.
Originally launched in 2007 in South Africa, the tournament shifted to even-numbered years in 2010 to replace the Champions Trophy in the ICC calendar. The field of participants has expanded since the inaugural 16-team edition, reaching 24 teams in 2024 before a planned reduction to 20 for 2026. The current structure divides 20 teams into four groups of five, with the top two advancing to the Super 8 stage, followed by semi-finals and a final. This format replaced the earlier group stage configurations as the game evolved.
India holds the record for the most titles, having won the tournament in 2007, 2024, and 2026. Other nations to lift the trophy include England, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Australia. The 2024 edition marked a significant geographical shift, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies, signalling an expansion into North America. The tournament underwent a rebranding from the 'ICC World Twenty20' in 2018 to reflect its global stature. While the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy focus on five-day and eight-team elite formats respectively, this event celebrates the shorter, high-intensity version of the sport.
The competition continues to grow in scale and prestige, hosting record-breaking performances and attracting viewers worldwide. Its unique position in the cricketing calendar ensures it remains a focal point for international cricket, blending tradition with modern commercial growth.
