The Jharkhand Premier League operates as a professional franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition within India. Officially recognized under the name Jharkhand T20 League, it is organized by the Jharkhand State Cricket Association, the governing body affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While initial announcements date back to 2010, the inaugural tournament took place in September 2020, with the Bokaro Blasters claiming the title. A revamped professional iteration launched in June 2026, marking a significant shift toward a structured franchise model.
The current season features six city-based franchises competing in a format that combines a double round-robin stage with knockout semi-finals and a final. Each team plays eight league matches, with the top four progressing to the decisive games. Chota Nagpur Royals emerged as the inaugural winners of this new era. The participating sides include the Dhanbad Diamonds, Jamshedpur Steelers, Koylanchal Super Kings, Ranchi Titans, and Santhal Strikers.
Unlike the official BCCI domestic pyramid, which includes competitions like the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, this league stands apart without promotion or relegation pathways. The structure mirrors the Indian Premier League but operates at a state level. It relies on private franchises owned by investors rather than a single state team selected by merit. Players are acquired through auctions and drafts, allowing a mix of international stars, national players, and local talent to compete alongside each other. This setup provides a commercial platform for emerging talent within the region, functioning in parallel to the traditional hierarchical domestic structure.
