About

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) operates as the premier franchise Twenty20 cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. Established in 2020 by the national governing body, Sri Lanka Cricket, the competition is administered commercially by the Innovative Production Group. It sits at the apex of the domestic pyramid, distinct from traditional structures that rely on club-based or provincial formations.

Five city-based franchises contest the title. The teams include the Colombo Kings, Dambulla Viiking, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Stallions, and Kandy Tuskers. These entities are private businesses that purchase licensing rights rather than emerging from regional associations. Consequently, there is no promotion or relegation within the league structure.

The season follows a specific format designed for high-intensity play. Each franchise participates in a double round-robin group stage, playing eight matches. This phase determines seeding for the knockout period, which consists of a Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, a Qualifier 2, and the final match.

Jaffna Stallions hold the record for success in the tournament, winning four titles since its inception. Their victories span the early years of the competition, including the inaugural 2020 season and the 2021 edition currently underway. Other clubs have seen significant changes; ownership transfers and rebranding exercises have occurred due to contractual issues involving previous entities.

International players feature prominently, attracted by the commercial model. The league has utilised rotating title sponsors to secure funding, shifting branding annually. While local talent provides the foundation, the presence of global stars drives the commercial appeal. The competition remains the country's most significant professional domestic cricket event, focusing on short-format entertainment rather than the multi-day traditions of the past.
