About

The **Lanka Premier League (LPL)** is the premier professional franchise Twenty20 cricket competition in Sri Lanka. Organized by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), it operates at the apex of the domestic T20 pyramid as a closed franchise system. This structure stands apart from the traditional association-based domestic squads that compete in the National Super League or Major Clubs League. There is no promotion or relegation between the LPL and provincial teams; participation is determined by franchise ownership and player drafts. The league currently features five teams: Colombo Kings, Dambulla Viiking, Galle Titans, Jaffna Stallions, and Kandy Tuskers. These sides contest a double round-robin group stage where each team plays every other side twice. The top four teams then advance to playoffs comprising a Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, a Qualifier 2, and a final to decide the champion. Commercial rights for the tournament were awarded to the Innovative Production Group, a Dubai-based company. The competition was founded in 2020, following initial plans that dated back to 2018. The inaugural season took place in late 2020 in Hambantota. The most successful franchise is Jaffna Kings, which has secured four titles across its history, including runs as the Jaffna Stallions. The current holders are Galle Titans, following their victory in the 2026 edition.

The league format relies on private ownership and international player recruitment, serving as the successor to the short-lived 2012 Sri Lanka Premier League. While the domestic structure remains association-based, the LPL offers a distinct commercial model. The tournament has operated through various conditions, including economic challenges that led to a postponement in 2022. Individual records within the competition include the highest individual score of 132 not out by Lahiru Udara and the leading wicket tally held by Wanindu Hasaranga.
