The ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier functions as a preliminary stage within the qualification pathway for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) through its regional body, ICC Africa, the event serves as a filter to reduce the field of competing nations before the decisive continental championship. This structure was introduced for the 2022 World Cup qualification cycle to manage the large number of participating African nations, a format that continued for subsequent cycles. The tournament is not a standalone league with a permanent founding date but rather a recurring qualification event situated below the Africa Regional Final in the continental pyramid.
The competition employs a format that typically involves dividing teams into groups, such as Sub-Regional Qualifier Group B, played in a round-robin style. The primary objective is for the top teams from each sub-regional group to advance to the Africa Regional Final, where the ultimate spots for the World Cup are decided. For the 2022 cycle, which was hosted in Rwanda, the competition featured teams including Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Gambia, and Cameroon. In that edition, Tanzania and Nigeria advanced to the next stage.
Another iteration of the tournament, set for the 2026 cycle, will see Group B hosted in Ghana. This specific group comprises Ghana, Tanzania, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Mozambique. The focus remains on identifying the strongest sides within the sub-region to progress to the final continental stage. Unlike the Africa Regional Final, which acts as the decisive championship, this qualifier is strictly a pathway to determine eligibility for that final round. No single national team holds a permanent title, as the competition is purely a qualification mechanism rather than a traditional league tournament.
