The National Counties Trophy is the premier one-day knockout competition for National Counties cricket in England and Wales. Founded in 1983 by the Minor Counties Cricket Association, which rebranded to the National Counties Cricket Association in 2020, the tournament sits below the first-class County Championship. It is distinct from the National Counties Championship, which operates as a multi-day league competition.
The Trophy is contested by all 20 National Counties teams, comprising 19 historic English counties and the Wales National County. The format typically involves a group stage followed by a knockout phase. Teams are divided into four groups of five, with the top teams advancing to quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. There is no promotion or relegation for the Trophy itself, as participation is based on National County status.
Berkshire is the most successful team with 9 titles (2004, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2026). Norfolk is the current holder, having defeated Cheshire in the 2024 final. Notably, from 1998 to 2002, the competition was expanded to include first-class county boards (as the ECB 38-County Cup), but reverted to a pure National Counties format thereafter. The key distinction from other competitions is its exclusive focus on non-first-class county teams in a knockout one-day format.
