About

The National Super League 4-Day Tournament is the elite tier of domestic cricket in Sri Lanka, governed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Launched in January 2022, the competition represents a major restructuring of the domestic pyramid, shifting from a traditional provincial model to a franchise-based system designed to simulate international conditions. This format concentrates the country’s top 100 players into five regional teams: Colombo, Dambulla, Galle, Jaffna, and Kandy.

The tournament operates as the primary selection yardstick for the national Test side, standing distinct from the Major Club 3-Day Tournament. While the club competition maintains historic first-class status for teams like SSC and NCC, the National Super League focuses on player development through a rigorous schedule. Matches are played over four days, following a round-robin league stage that feeds into knockout semi-finals and a final.

Galle District and Dambulla District have established themselves as the most successful teams, each holding two titles. Dambulla District secured the most recent championship in 2026, defeating Colombo District in the final. The introduction of this franchise-style model was influenced by technical advisor Tom Moody, aiming to bridge the gap between domestic performance and international readiness.

There is no direct promotion or relegation between the two main domestic competitions. Instead, the Major Club tournament acts as a qualifying pool for player selection into the National Super League squads. This separation ensures that the elite tier remains focused on high-performance cricket without the instability of movement between tiers. The competition continues to serve as the central hub for identifying talent for the national team, with each of the five teams vying for supremacy through a structured and competitive schedule.
